Happy World Smile Day! Celebrate by Spreading Smiles
October 4, 2024
Unless you don’t text, go onto social media, or do anything online at all, you have certainly seen and used a bright yellow smiley face at some point. It appears practically everywhere in many contexts, but do you realize it has a deeper purpose? If you didn’t know its original meaning, don’t feel bad. Today, on World Smile Day, you can change that! In this post, you’ll learn more about this icon, its associated day, and how you can celebrate it.
When the Smiley Face Began
In the 1960s, it was a time of political and social unrest. An artist in Worcester created the bright smiley face as symbol of kindness, intending it to encourage people to show compassion to others, in spite of any differences in politics, religion, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.
World Smile Day Today
In the years following its inception, the smiley face has been used commercially, obscuring its original meaning. However, when World Smile Day became an official commemorative day in 1999, it served as a reminder of the smiley face’s real intent. To celebrate and honor it, perform a kind act for someone in your community and help bring a smile to their face.
How You Can Share a Smile
Doing something kind doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. In fact, little actions can have a huge impact on others. In your local area, you have plenty of chances to participate in worthwhile causes that help those in need of an uplifting smile. You can donate to charities or drives through organizations that benefit kids and families in your area. Your generosity and compassion can help make their day happier. As an added bonus, you’ll probably find yourself smiling from the good feeling you get in helping others!
Being Kind to Your Own Smile
In addition to showing kindness to other people, now is a good time to consider how kind you are to yourself. If your oral health is suffering, you may not feel confident in sharing your own smile, and you aren’t practicing self-care. To get back on track, you must brush and floss to avoid cavities and infection and protect your teeth and gums. You also need to visit your dentist at least every six months for a checkup and cleaning to keep your teeth strong and healthy. If more dental work is required, get it done to restore your smile and make it ready to share with others, brightening their day.
Although World Smile Day comes around just once a year, take advantage of small chances to spread kindness and create smiles all year long!
