Dentist vs. Periodontist: What’s the Difference?
April 11, 2022
Abutment, bicuspid, cementum… there is some language your dental team uses on a daily basis that may seem foreign to you. That’s why it’s always a good idea to ask for clarification on unfamiliar terms! One common question that patients ask is, “What is a Periodontist?” If you’ve been recommended to one due to a serious oral health issue, like gum disease or missing teeth, then read on to learn all about their qualifications and how they can help you.
So, What Is a Periodontist?
In short, periodontology is a field of dentistry dedicated specifically to the diseases and conditions that impact the supporting structures of the teeth. As a result, a periodontist is a dental professional who focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease, as well as the placement of dental implants. To get to this point, they need to undergo additional training beyond dental school, like an Advanced Education Program in Periodontics. Since staying up-to-date on the latest techniques and technology is so crucial, periodontists often also maintain active memberships with the American Academy of Periodontology and other professional organizations.
A Few Reasons You Might be Referred to a Periodontist
When it comes to biannual checkups, dental fillings, and other essential and restorative dental care, your general dentist has the education and training to help. However, more specialized treatments often require more specialized care. For this reason, you will likely be referred to a periodontist for:
- Gum disease treatment – Did you know that roughly 50% of U.S. adults struggle with gingivitis? Swollen, bleeding, and inflamed gums are some common symptoms of this serious oral health concern. And, if left untreated, the infection can worsen, resulting in loose and missing teeth. Don’t worry – a skilled periodontist can intervene, restoring your teeth and gums in the process.
- Dental implants – Periodontists are masters of both soft and hard tissues, making them uniquely qualified to place dental implants. Plus, they have completed in-depth surgical training that general dentists don’t receive, which ensures they can skillfully complete the procedure.
Although you may not be familiar with the term “periodontist,” just know that they are dental professionals who are extremely familiar with treating gum disease and placing dental implants. In short, they are a specialist who is passionate about restoring smiles to their former glory!
